Resin Jewellery Inspired by Nature & Fairy Tale Movies

What is your business about?

SHEVJOYS was born to spread my joy of making handcrafted resin and other products. All of the designs are mostly inspired by nature and fairy tale movies. Each and every item is handmade with love, care and thought and they become perfect, meaningful gifts for you and your loved ones.

What made you decide to start your business? When did you start?

This business actually started very randomly during the circuit breaker in 2020. I was pretty amazed by ASMR videos during that period of time and I happened to chance upon an ASMR video of resin demoulding, which got me very interested in and excited about resin. Furthermore, I have really enjoyed arts and crafts since I was young. I always make very elaborate cards and handmade gifts for my family and friends during special occasions. Hence, I decided to take a leap of faith to start my first online business, SHEVJOYS jewellery brand.

Why did you choose to take part in SEM?

I have ventured into many opportunities such as pop-up booths, but I have never tried selling my handmade products in a retail store. This is something new and I am definitely looking forward to what’s in store for me to learn as an entrepreneur as I showcase and sell my products at NUS Co-op!

What are some of the challenges you face as a student entrepreneur?

It would be the juggle between this business and school/internships. As the curing time for resin is about 24 hours, each stage has to be done carefully and most of my products take about 3-4 days to be completed. This is a huge time constraint in churning out collections, especially when I am packed with school and internships.

Another challenge would be the amount of reach I can get to increase sales and engagement. Operating mainly on Instagram, the Instagram algorithm has changed in the past year, which made it hard for small businesses to operate on this platform, which greatly affected our reach and sales.

What is one tip that has helped you in juggling your responsibilities as a student and entrepreneur well?

Time management. I tend to plan ahead! As I know that crafting would take up a significant amount of time and I would not want to neglect my studies during school semesters, I would create and stock up a few collections during my holidays, so that I can launch them over the semester. I also have a social calendar to plan out collections and content to maintain engagement even during my busiest periods of the semester.

What motivates you and keeps you going in your business?

It would be the joy I get when my customers are happy with my products, especially when they are returning customers. This motivates and reassures me of my work and passion, which pushes me to keep going and create even better products.

Not to forget the meaningful relationships made with customer-turned friends and other small business owners. This creates a wholesome community of creators and customers supporting each other, which provides me with a safe space to showcase and sell my handmade products.
